Focusing on XQuery

ADT's Peter Bochner talks about XQuery with DataDirect President, Rick Reidy: Rick Reidy likes to call DataDirect "the Switzerland of data access." The XQuery query language specification has become a focus of DataDirect's, Reidy says. This fall, the company will beta test a database-independent XQuery engine that integrates conventional relational databases with XML data sources using XQuery. XQuery adherents believe the language will change server-side programming as much as Java servlets did. Java Releases Ramp Up Productivity

Peter Coffee talks about XQuery with Jonathan Robie at JavaOne 2004: "Creating XML from relational databases is like report writing," said Jonathan Robie, XML program manager for DataDirect Technologies, of Bedford, Mass., while briefing eWEEK Labs at JavaOne. Records are best presented to people with HTML but best exchanged among processes with XML, Robie said. The flip side is that "XML data has hierarchy and sequence; relational data has neither," said Robie. Integrating data from these two worlds is a challenge developers would do well to start considering now because it's clear that most new projects will be XML-based but that legacy SQL data and established SQL skills will persist in the community for decades to come.
