I stumbled on one ... 
In an <unnamed> XML to JSON conversion implementation, if you have an empty XML element with xsi:nil 
it will be translated to a JSON null  making the distinction between "" and null possible and reliable.
Sometimes that's a useful thing to the reader of the JSON.
