Tim Bray's Lark is a notable exception -- it uses giant state tables.
I don't remember what XP does.

Personally, I like recursive-descent a lot (and probably wouldn't have 
finished writing the original AElfred parser otherwise).  Miles
guesses correctly that SAX1 was push to accommodate existing parsers.
