I use emacs with an xml mode enabled, but this only assists me with syntax
errors (unterminated elements, etc) and not semantic errors (document doesn't
conform to its declared schema). Is there an emacs package which can do both?

Right ! But the point here was EMacs is able to work on very large files, and
is a little bit easier than vi (according to some EMacs fans...) that as also
some XML extensions...

Not forgetting that Emacs has modes (packages) which make it a fully-fledged
XML editor. All open source.
