Perhaps $xsd-match-node is not the xs:element element, but a document node that's the parent of the xs:element element. Certainly if this were the case it would explain your output. Try the following to test Michaels suggestion: <MIN><xsl:value-of select="$xsd-match-node/xsl:element/@minOccurs"/></MIN> Cheers
