Use templates and modes:

<xsl:template match="...">

  <xsl:apply-templates select="thing1|thing2" mode="thing"/>

</xsl:template>

<xsl:template match="thing1" mode="thing">

</xsl:template>

<xsl:template match="thing2" mode="thing">
...processing for thing2
