another point; flow programming offers an alternative to state based workflow models ... this is important continuation of functional programming paradigm; the benefits of eschewing with state management opens up well known possibilities in terms of efficient memory handling and performance at larger scale.
Simon does a good job indirectly reminding us that flow programming aligns itself with humans; in xproc vernacular, this allows some groups to specialize working on steps and for pipeline authors to concentrate on multi step transformations. Steps as a reuse mechanism with inputs and outputs are much easier to grok.
