what kind of ascii have you in mind? (www-math is probably a better

For example for docbook normally you are generating html or pdf in which 
case mathml may not need converting at all (html and xsl-fo may 
renderers understand mathml) html or you may need to convert to TeX-in-ascii

Explicitly going from mathml to ascii there is

But that produces

which is fun but unless you have fond memories of 1980's terminal 
interfaces to computer algebra systems, perhaps not so useful.

So perhaps you meant

\sum+{i=0}^\infty x_i

or

The sum from 0 to infinity of x sub i

You could get (something equivalent to) the first of those, TeX syntax,
