I agree. I find xml:id a very useful feature, for example to mark some
<div> in an XHTML page that may be re-purposed for display in an
<iframe> or as snippet in another non-XML templating system.

All that's needed is a DOM and getElementById().

In addition, id() in XPath is very convenient.

Last not least the shortcut document('bla.xml#some-id-123') in XSLT.
