let me suggest RTF as a rescue option. Rich Text Format is a tagged format
that all versions of word understand and that parsers can be drawn from.
all the tags, all the information is in printed text, no binaries no
conversion of numbers. AND the format is open source. see
Rich Text Format (RTF) Specification, version 1.6 for more
