I am surprised to hear you say this. In my old lab we had Microway built 
DEC Alpha workstations in the $5K range circa 1993.

And now with the G5, the price performance is not significantly 
different than that for a dual Xeon machine -- I don't think there has 
long been much of a 64 bit tax, just a dearth of appropriate 
applications -- also back in 1993, having >4 gig of memory would have 
been somewhat of a luxury.
