Sometime soon we will have standards for parsing data content into
typeable subelements:
that will make life more straight forward for this kind of
graphical-object-description
language. Until then, we have to make up our own embedded little
languages sometimes.

Will we? This is a very interesting comment! Sorry to be ignorant, but where
is this standards work taking place?
Well, for a start, XQuery/XSLT2.XPath2.  See

http://www.w3.org/TR/xquery-operators/#string.match

http://www.w3.org/TR/xslt20/#regular-expressions
http://www.w3.org/TR/xslt20/#format-number
http://www.w3.org/TR/xslt20/#format-date

Also, Jeni Tennison's recent work on defineable datatypes is relevant here too.
I expect the ISO DSDL effort will be paying attention to this trend, in some way.

Cheers
