<Quote1> Isn't this what Oasis/UBL is trying to do also? </Quote1> Actually not at all - they are completely different things, although UBL was at one time considering using UDEF in its work. UBL is creating XML representations of business transactions, while UDEF is much more fine-grained: it focuses on using "intelligent identifiers" to represent XML tag semantics. The issue that many people express is that XML tags do not provide adequate semantic clarity - for example, what does "LastName" mean? In some cultures, the last name is not what we (US) consider to be "family name". UDEF attempts to solve (or at least help) this by creating "registered universal IDs" that provide a common frame of reference to establish semantics. For example, the UDEF ID of "g.9_8" means the following in the following contexts: MIL-STD-2549: Part Product Identifier X12 EDI: Product/Service ID etc. An XML representation would be: <ProductPartIdentifierUID=?9_5.8?>123-456-789</ProductPartIdentifier> The communicated benefit is that one can change tag names, but use of the UID signifies "what one is *really* talking about". Isn't this what Oasis/UBL is trying to do also? UDEF, OAG, UBL, xCBL, etc.... that sounds like a lot of "universal" electronic business interchange formats. Which is fine with me, means that they'll need people to write translation code :-) > > But this has to be seen as a problem. From reading their mailing lists I know that UBL is trying to work with OAG on document design.
