There is a good description of the ISO process at
    http://www.iso.ch/iso/en/stdsdevelopment/whowhenhow/how.html
and nice diagram at
    http://www.iso.ch/iso/en/stdsdevelopment/whowhenhow/proc/deliverables/schema.html

Interesting that ISO now has 12000 standards, from fire
ISO 9994:2002 Lighters -- Safety specification
to water (and earth)
ISO 8099:2000 Small craft -- Toilet waste retention systems
to air
ISO 22643:2003 Space data and information transfer systems --
Data entity dictionary specification language (DEDSL) -- XML/DTD Syntax
to wood (for Simon)
ISO 2729:1995 Woodworking tools -- Chisels and gouges

Cheers
