I'm not sure how, exactly, the antagonism arises. I wish it wouldn't.
It only makes conversation more difficult.
What I will say is that, in my experience, the needs of folks with
lots of data that bears a strong resemblance to database tables
serialized with angle brackets and the folks with lots of data that
resembles human-readable prose with some structured markup are quite
different.
People in the former camp often have a strong desire to express data
typing relationships that simply don't arise in the latter camp.
