DOM is primarily an API for accessing an XML document using the DOM data model while the XQuery and XPath data model is just that, a data model. As a general data model for XML infosets the DOM has some issues, as an API it is horrific.

Admittedly, programming terminology isn't my domain. Why are XQuery and
XPath data models, while DOM is refered to as an object model?
