There is a world of difference between *a* data model for XML and *the* data model for XML. There are many data models for XML, none of which can plausibly claim to be *the* data model for XML. XML data models include the XPath 1.0 model, the XPath 2.0 + XQuery model, the Infoset, the PSVI, the DOM data model, the JDOM data model, and many more all of which are related but have subtle and important differences.
