 but XQuery/Xpath allows much more of the lexical representation to
be lost, which allows incompatibilities between systems and loss of
information.

But the damage may already have been done by building a "typed view" of
the document when building the data model. Choosing not to import
schemas into your query doesn't resurrect your input document.
