Maybe it's time to close out that charter, reduce its scope completely, and thereby end the existence of any such stakes. Let the W3C get out of the XML business completely. The results since XML 1.0 itself (and maybe XSLT and XPath if you want to count them as part of XML and not as set of style tools) seem to range from annoying to catastrophic, depending on who you ask. The W3C can get back to thinking about the Web and vocabularies for working on the Web, things they've done well for a long time. It's nice that we have XML, but I'm not sure that its future development per se is necessary.
