Avoid purchase of third-party infrastructure.  It's great to have common 
data syntax, networking protocols, why not app protocols?  (Give credit to 
BEA, for doing the equivalent of turning on a dime and moving from 
"legacy middleware" to WS-I founder.)

Fidelity [1] expects to eventually toss 3/4 of their current IT 
middleware, both software and servers.
