From a REST POV, SOAP adds this; - mandatory extension mechanism (previously seen in PEP[1] and RFC 2774[2]) - well defined intermediary model (previously seen in PEP[1], and to a lesser extent, HTTP 1.1) - XML syntax for the above Nothing to sneeze at, but given that hardly anybody takes advantage of these features, the true value of SOAP will never be realized. IMO, developers will consider it a failure long before they recognize what it's really good at.
