Why do you drop the white space nodes if handling mixed content?
Dropping them (at the xml parse or xsl levels) is optional.

I'm dealing with someone else's (huge, ancient) XSLT here and I'm trying to make as few changes as possible, and to change only one small thing at a time :-)
