  Thanks for suggesting the use of the replace() function in the group-by
attribute.

  Here's what worked for me in case it helps anyone else out.

<xsl:for-each-group select="//section"
group-by="replace(paperTitle,'([\W\d]+)?(\w)(.*)','$2')">
