It works :-) thanks a lot David !
I didn't thought about casting the @class attribute as a string, which
quite a different interpretation actually !
On the other hand I don't understand very well why the choose isn't
necessary anymore ?!
When under the for-each-group, instructions are applied to each element
of the group (that means all "select" elements)?
I would have insert a <xsl:for-each select="current-group">.. but well i
thought I was ok with grouping methods in XSLT2, but it seems I still
have to learn ;-)
what about text()[normalize-space()], i never seen such a predicate,
does the normalized-text directly ?
Anyway thanks for your help,
Matt.

something like this perhaps
<xsl:stylesheet version="2.0"
xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform">
<xsl:output indent="yes"/>
<xsl:template match="p">
<p>
<xsl:for-each-group select="*|text()[normalize-space()]"
group-adjacent="string(@class)">
<xsl:copy>
<xsl:copy-of select="@*"/>
<xsl:apply-templates select="current-group()/node()"/>
</xsl:copy>
</xsl:for-each-group>
</p>
</xsl:template>
</xsl:stylesheet>
