I think basically I was thinking of this, given xsl:key name="k" match="*[@id]" use="@id" then the set of keys is got by doing something like select="distinct-values(//*/@id)" so can you speed up that // using a key? to do it with a key you'd probably have to do something like xsl:key name="r" match="@id" use="''" but using a key with a constant key is probably just an inefficient alternative to using a variable, especially if you are only going to use it once, as in select="distinct-values(key('r','')) or something....
