Awesome, that's (close to) what I was looking for.  If there aren't 3
elements in the input (perhaps only 1), how can I modify this to fill
the remaining slots with some predefined values such as 'N/A' as shown
below?

you are making it sound far too complicated, you don't need any
variables at all.
