I'll look over your suggestions for the new way to write the predicate. Here is what I currently do:

<xsl:variable name="mypos_minus_one" select="position()-1"/> <xsl:variable name="prev" select="$search_results[$mypos_minus_one]/ xna:data_evt_weekday/xna:name"/> <xsl:if test="(position() = 1) or (xna:data_evt_weekday/xna:name != $prev)">
