to do next.  What (input xml file) am I transforming?  Can you apply an XSL
file without an input file?

Yes, you would use Saxon 8 with the runtime option/arguments
  -it main stylesheet.xsl
where -it main defines the _i_nitial _t_emplate by name ("main").
