Just to clarify, the reason it worked when you change around the
quotation marks is that you're changing what is being evaluated...

$foo = bar, you are comparing the string value of $foo against the
string values of the elements named bar that are children of the
current node.

$foo = 'bar' you are comparing the string value of $foo against the
string 'bar'.
