If you have document-uri() are you using XSLT/XPath 2.0?

If so, you also have current-date().

If not, look into Saxon's support of EXSLT, which also has a date() function.

Actually, since you're using Saxon 8.6, you should just try current-date(): it might just work even in XSLT 1.0 (due to forwards-compatibility mode).
