Aspects of this selection are namespace qualified, but your data sample is
not.  

sql:rowset != rowset

>     <xsl:with-param name='therow' select='.'/>x

Just name the thing your asking for.  Select="." is selecting self::node(),
not child::node() as you seem to think.

<xsl:with-param name="therow" select="row"/>
