xsl-for-each-group is an XSLT 2 instruction.
XSLT is still in draft stage  and saxon8 is the only widely used
implementation. Most  XSLT engines implement the current XSLT standard
which is 1.0. So I'd guess you are using an XSLT 1 processor.
Jeni's site that Michael refered to has many XSLT 1.0 examples
of grouping.
