this is a faq:
You just need two templates, one that does an identity transform, eg
<xsl:template match="*">
<xsl:copy>
<xsl:copy-of select="@*"/>
<xsl:apply-apply-templates/>
</xsl:copy>
</xsl:templates>
and another that works on summary nodes
<xsl:template match="summary">
<xsl:copy>
<xsl:copy-of select="@*"/>
<xsl:value-of select="normalize-space(.)"/>
</xsl:copy>
</xsl:templates>
