that's xslt 2 syntax and you are using an xslt 1 system.

That's legal syntax for a test you don't want, it tests the key
attribute with the string value of the expression (.='Application' or  .='ITAsset'
which is either "true" or "false".

So if the key attribute is Application or ITAsset then the string value
of (.='Application' or  .='ITAsset') is "true" nut the string value of
@key" is "Application" (or "ITAsset") and in eiether case it is not
equal to "true" so the test is false.

If the key attribute has value "false" then the string value of 
(.='Application' or  .='ITAsset') is "false" and so the test 
@key=(.='Application' or  .='ITAsset') will be true

For any other value (.='Application' or  .='ITAsset') is "false"
and the key attribute is not "false" so
@key=(.='Application' or  .='ITAsset') will be false.
