John,
I can't tell whether your message is recent since it's labeled as July 31 2003, which hasn't happened yet in my mailer. :-> But Lars has already provided an excellent answer, so I suggest you dig into what he says. The bottom line is that you need to take a closer look at the XSLT processing model (don't just guess: study!) to see how templates are matched for processing, when they fire, and what <xsl:apply-templates/> does. The processing model is well documented in a number of places: Mike Kay's book, Jeni Tennison's Beginning book, many other excellent books, the XSLT Recommendation (http://w3.org/TR/xslt) itself, and in the archives of this list. Cheers, Wendell At 06:31 PM 7/31/2003, you wrote: Thanks for your help, Mike, Wendell and Dave. I have tried to fix some of the redudancies.
