<xsl:variable name="cnt"as="xs:integer*>
<xsl:for-each select="$root//*[name() = $nm]">
<xsl:value-of select="count(.//*)"/>
</xsl:for-each>
</xsl:sequence>
or
<xsl:variable name="cnt" select="for $x in $root//*[name() = $nm] return count($x//*)"/>
