The example you posted had spaces (#20) not #160 characters,
it's best to post real examples...
You need translate($caption_title,' @#160;','--')"
if you want to translate both spaces and non breaking spaces to -
(with a & not a @ I used @ in this mail to stop some broken mailers
incorrectly displaying the character reference.
