Replying to myself again . . .
I seem to have misunderstood xsl:copy-of thoroughly,
and failed to realize the power of the "select"
attribute of xsl:variable. This . . .
<xsl:variable
select="(div[1]|div0[1]|div1[1]|divGen[1])[1]"/>
. . . seems more on track.
