What happens in XSLT 2 when a schema is applied to assign types and the document is invalid, either a little or a lot? Does the transformation fail?

I was under the impression that getting type information from
a schema implies validation, and if the document does not
validate, the transformation would not even start (i.e. the
whole process fails).
