Well, you can, but not directly. You can do something like:
<xsl:template match="thing">
<xsl:variable name="temp">
<xsl:apply-imports/>
</
<xsl:copy select="xx:node-set($temp)/*">
<xsl:copy-of select="@*"/>
<xsl:attribute name="extra">value</xsl:attribute>
</
</
