Interesting. The moment of epiphany for me was when I saw his unofficial
notation for what he was at the time calling a "universal name" (now
"expanded-name"):

I kind of wish they had gone ahead and allowed the latter syntax.

Maybe that was the problem... IIRC jclark's explanation doesn't quite match reality?
