Here is a problem. <xsl:for-each> sets context node to be subTypes attribute node and then in <xsl:with-param> you are trying to get @subType attribute of context node, which is this attribute already. Attribute nodes don't have attributes obviously. <xsl:for-each> is superfluous here, get rid of it.

works with XMLSPY internal XSLT processor, and doesn't work with XALAN.

Looks like a bug in xml spy.
