I would recommend that you take the time to go through one or two of the many excellent XSLT tutorials on the Web and browse David Pawson's FAQ--an hour or two spent on that study should give you everything you need to implement you ID generation function.

I would normally present the code for my suggestion but I'm about to head out the door.
