If you want html then that is all you need, but the original (perfectly
reasonable) request was to output valid xhtml, specifying the xhtml DTD.
<br/> only "needs to be "<br>" if you are generating html.
The specified intention here was to generate xhtml which meets the
"compatibility guidelines" in the XHTML 1.0 rec.
