[xsl] Some basic things

In my previous mail i forgot to add that there is one more thing confusing me

some time we use "."(dot) and some time "*"(astrics)
like
 count( . | key('somename', @name)[1] ) = 1

and
select=" *|@

what are the differences and for what purpose we use them
