Thank you for the very clear examples and options (and Greg for the humor).
I did try the dot (.) earlier but I probably had something else wrong in my
template and did not get the correct output.

The XSLT 2.0 code looks more inviting to this programmer's eyes, but I
don't think Xalan supports it yet.  :-/
