I think No and never is a little harsh -- afterall, acrobat reader IS a pdf renderer engine -- if Alastair ran his transformation as a dynamic server side transformation to pdf, then wouldn't the display of the resultant text in the reader plug in be pretty much what Alastair asked for in the first place? But how to get XSL Fo to PDF? Alistair spoke of a client-only solution like XSLT with MSXML in IE. That's not possible. So "never" until there will be a FOP-like plugin. Of course you can run a server/servlet like Cocoon 2 with integrated FOP to produce PDFs.
