<span><xsl:value-of select="whatever"/></span> and 'whatever' is nothing, msxml2.6 outputs Can you use <span><xsl:value-of select="whatever"/> </span> ? So <span> isn't empty. Or some conditional processing: IF whatever is empty place a non-breaking space.
