<!-- resolve OR terms by seperate xsl:copy-of //-->
why not just use the xpath and and or?
both of your examples
((author='Knuth' OR title='Algorithms') AND releaseDate >= 1999) or another
one
((title='Windows XP' AND doctype='manual') OR (doctype='manpage' ANDNOT
title='Linux' ))
would be legal XPath as written if you use and instead of AND and or
instead of OR and and not( ) instead of ANDNOT.
