Aahh! Thank you (and Mike Kay) for the replies and clarification of what a root is and what I really meant when I said "rootnode" (= root-element). I will change the code at once :)

'//' is never the best solution - you said already why it is so.

'/@rootattr' won't work, because '/' has never attributes.
There is a difference between the root and the root-element. What you want
is '/*/@rootattr'.
